Barcode Generator FAQs

Is this barcode generator free?

Yes. You can create and download EAN-13, Code 128, Code 39 and QR code barcodes free, with no sign-up. For retail products sold through Amazon.in, Flipkart or modern retail, the EAN-13 number itself must come from GS1 India.

How do I calculate the EAN-13 check digit?

Add the digits in odd positions of the first 12 digits, add three times the digits in even positions, and take the total modulo 10. The check digit is 10 minus that remainder, or 0 if the remainder is 0. For 890123456789 the total is 130, so the check digit is 0.

How do I get a barcode for my product in India?

Register with GS1 India, the body that allots GTIN (EAN-13) numbers to Indian brands. Once you have your numbers, assign one to each product variant and use a generator like this one to print the EAN-13 barcode for it.

What does the 890 prefix on an EAN-13 barcode mean?

890 is the GS1 prefix allotted to India, so GTINs issued by GS1 India begin with 890. It shows which GS1 office issued the number, not where the product was made.

Do Amazon.in and Flipkart need GS1 barcodes?

Marketplaces generally ask for a valid GTIN such as an EAN-13 when you list a product, and they may check it against the GS1 database. Some categories or brand-registered sellers can apply for an exemption, so check the current listing rules in your seller central account.

Can I make up my own EAN-13 number?

No. A number with a valid check digit can still belong to another company, and marketplaces and retailers such as Reliance Retail or DMart expect GTINs registered to your brand. For internal use only, such as warehouse or bin labels, use Code 128 instead.

What is the difference between EAN-13, Code 128 and a QR code?

EAN-13 is the 13-digit retail barcode scanned at billing counters. Code 128 encodes letters, digits and symbols and is used for SKUs, FNSKU labels, cartons and warehouse bins. A QR code holds longer text such as a URL or batch details and can be scanned with a phone camera.

Which barcode should I use for Amazon FBA (FNSKU) or warehouse labels?

FNSKU and most warehouse, bin and carton labels use Code 128. Copy the FNSKU exactly as shown in your seller account, generate it as Code 128 and print it at 100% scale.

Why doesn't my barcode scan after printing?

The most common causes are printing with "fit to page" (which shrinks the bars), a label size too small for a long code, or low print contrast. Print at 100% / Actual size, use black on white, and choose a larger label for long codes.

Which label size should I choose?

Small (40 × 20 mm) suits short SKUs and retail tags, Medium (60 × 30 mm) works well for most product and FNSKU labels, and Large (100 × 50 mm) suits cartons and longer codes. Match the size to the label rolls your thermal printer uses.
