HS Code Lookup

Helps find and search Harmonized System (HS) commodity codes for classifying physical goods, determining applicable tariffs, and completing customs declarations.

How it works

HS (Harmonized System) codes classify goods for customs. The first 6 digits are the same in every country that uses the system; countries add more digits for their own tariff, and India uses 8-digit codes. This lookup helps you search for a code by product description or by part of a code.

No HS code data source is connected to this page yet. You can try a search to see how it works, but it will show a “not connected” message and no codes. It never shows sample or made-up codes in place of real data.

  1. Type a product name or description, such as “cotton t-shirt”, or an HS code, such as 61, 6109 or 6109.10.
  2. The lookup works out whether you typed a code or text. A code can have 2 to 10 digits, with or without dots or spaces, so 6109.10 and 6109 10 are the same search.
  3. For a text search you can add optional details, such as material, intended use or product type, to narrow the results. They are not used for code searches.
  4. Once a data source is connected, results are grouped as: exact code match, codes within the code you searched, broader codes containing it, and possible matches for text searches.
  5. Open “Classification details” for the classification path, notes and exclusions, and duty and taxes only where the source publishes them. Use Copy code to paste a code into another document, such as the Commercial Invoice Template.

Search examples

Searching by code

You type

Product or HS code
6109 10 00

What the lookup does

  1. Reads it as a code search for 61091000 (8 digits).
  2. Treats a result coded 61091000 as an exact match, and 6109 or 6109.10 as broader codes that contain it.

Result A code search for 61091000. No data source is connected yet, so today the page shows “HS code data is not connected yet” instead of results.

Searching by description

You type

Product or HS code
cotton t-shirt
Material (optional)
cotton

What the lookup does

  1. Reads it as a text search and sends the material detail with it.
  2. Lists results under “Possible matches”. Read each description, its notes and exclusions before choosing a code.

Result A text search for “cotton t-shirt”. No data source is connected yet, so today the page shows “HS code data is not connected yet” instead of results.

Result Nothing is searched until the entry is corrected.

Frequently asked questions

Is the HS code data live?

Not yet. No classification data source, such as an official customs tariff or a licensed HS dataset, is connected to this page. Until one is, searches show a “not connected” message and no codes, and no sample codes are shown in their place.

What can I search for?

A product name or short description of up to 120 characters, such as “cotton t-shirt”, or an HS code of 2 to 10 digits, such as 61 (a chapter), 6109 (a heading) or 6109.10 (a subheading). Codes can be typed with or without dots or spaces.

What do the digits of an HS code mean?

The first 2 digits are the chapter, the first 4 the heading and the first 6 the subheading; these are shared internationally. Longer codes are national: India uses 8-digit codes, and some countries use 10.

Is a result a binding classification?

No. Results help you research a classification. Only the customs authority’s decision is binding, so confirm the code with the customs authority or a licensed customs broker before you file.

Where can I check an Indian HS code officially?

In the customs tariff published by CBIC (Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs) and the ITC(HS) schedules published by DGFT, or with a licensed customs broker.

Will it show duty rates?

Only if the connected source publishes them, and only for that source’s country. If the source has no rate, the lookup says so and does not estimate one. To estimate duty with rates you enter yourself, use the Import Duty Calculator.

Is my search sent anywhere?

Not at the moment: with no data source connected, nothing you type leaves your browser. When a source is connected, your search text and any optional details you add will be sent to it.

Why do I see “That looks like a code but is not in a recognised format”?

Codes may contain only digits, in groups of at least 2 digits separated by single dots or spaces, such as 6109.10 or 6109 10 00. Dashes, slashes and single digits are not accepted.

Why are there no results?

Because no data source is connected yet, no search can return results.
